About
prelaps is a small personal site for tools that run in your browser. No account, no install, nothing uploaded.
Who makes this
One person builds and runs it. Not a company and not a team — the idea, the code, the writing and the three translations all come from the same desk. Tools do not appear quickly because of that. What is here, though, is what I keep using myself, so when something breaks I notice and fix it.
Why it started
The first tool was the mojibake fixer. I reopened a CSV I had filed away a few years earlier and every name in it had turned into unreadable symbols. The recovery sites I found all wanted the file uploaded, and it was work material, so I could not. I ended up building one that finishes inside the browser instead.
It has gone the same way since. I need something, nothing suitable exists, I build it and leave it here. The bulk image resizer and the race picker used for settling turns both arrived that way.
Why nothing is uploaded
There is no server behind these tools. Whatever you paste or pick is processed inside your browser and never leaves your device. That is less a promise than a structure — there is nothing at the other end to receive it.
It has practical consequences. With no upload there is no reason to cap file size or count, and no queue to wait in; in exchange, speed follows whatever machine you are on. The one program you download (VFilemanage) is the exception, and it too runs only on your own PC.
What gets built and what does not
Only things I have gone looking for more than once. If something good already exists I do not rebuild it, and I do not pad the site with calculators and unit converters to catch searches. The same reasoning is why every tool page says where that tool stops working — knowing the cases it cannot fix saves you the attempt.
Running costs
The domain and hosting are paid for personally, and ads cover the cost. They go where they do not sit over an input box or a run button, and using the tools stays free and unconditional.
Google Analytics is used to count visits. What that does and does not record is set out here — Privacy Policy
Getting in touch
Something broken, a wrong result, a feature you wish existed — any of it helps. This is a one-person project, so a reply can take a few days. The address is here — Contact
